Gastmusiker

Bias Boshell spielte Keyboards (Yamaha DX7, Roland JP8 und JX3 und einen Steinway-Flügel). Die orchestralen Arrangements wurden von Pip Williams geschrieben und von den David Katz Strings aufgeführt. Stevie Lange, Vicki Brown (die Mutter von Sam Brown, die auf der nachfolgenden Tour für die Band sang und später eine erfolgreiche Solokarriere begann) und Joy Yates sangen einige der Backing-Vocals.

Titel

Stammt ursprünglich aus dem Text von Johns "Rebel Woman":

I see the victims of circumstance
Convicted without a crime

Les wurde dadurch zum Titelsong inspiriert.

Hülle

Die sehr auffallende Hülle basiert auf einem Poster für einen Berliner Kabarettclub und Bierkeller, das Senta Söneland heißt und 1912 vom berühmten Illustrator Jo Steiner gemalt wurde. John schlug das Design vor, nachdem er es in einem Buch mit Postern gesehen hatte, und die einzige entscheidende Änderung, die gemacht wurde, war eine Träne im Auge des Clowns.

Gregg Jackman

Gregg wurde 1953 als Sohn eines Musikers in Kingsbury, London geboren. Er wurde Aussteuerer, dann Haupt-Toning im RAK Studio, wo er Pip Williams traf. Er trat 1980 Handle Artists bei und arbeitete für Moody Blues wie auch BJH.

Sideshow

Johns Auftakt folgt thematisch wie auch musikalisch "Fifties Child" und greift das Thema der Medien und ihrer alles andere überdeckenden Beschäftigung mit Unglücken und schlechten Nachrichten an. Nach den schlechtinformierten Kritiken, die BJH selbst erleiden mußten, ist es lobenswert, daß es kein persönlicher Kleinkrieg wird, sondern eher eine Klage über verlorene Unschuld. Der Song ist auch bemerkenswert als seltenes Beispiel, wo John und Les beide im gleichen Song Leitstimmen singen.

Dieser Rocker von Les wurde mit seinem treibenden Rhythmus und eingängigen Refrain zum festen Bestandteil der Liveshows der Band. Der Song hält die Atmosphäre von frenetischem Nightlife und Club-Kultur fest.

Rebel Woman

Nicht, wie manche Fans dachten, eine Kritik an Margaret Thatcher, obwohl einige Zeilen wohl zutreffen könnten! Das Thema war Mutter Rußland in den Tagen vor Glasnost und Perestroika und dem Zusammenbruch des kommunistischen Systems, und der Song wurde geschrieben, nachdem das koreanische Linienflugzeug abgeschossen worden war.

Ein Liebeslied von Les, das eine romantische Phantasiewelt hervorzaubert. Der Song enthält auch einen scharfen Seitenhieb gegen die "kleinen Leute", die ihm vorschreiben, was er tun soll. Vielleicht wieder die Kritiker der Band?

Kein herkömmliches Liebeslied, sondern eine direkte Nachricht von John an die Fans. "Light up the flame of love" ist nicht nur im übertragenen Sinn gemeint, sondern bezieht sich auch auf’s Publikum, das Feuerzeuge hochhält.

Victims Of Circumstance

Ein völliger Stimmungswechsel für den Auftakt der zweiten Seite. Dies ist ein Antikriegslied mit einigen bitteren Worten über Politiker und Führer, die ihr Volk im Dunklen tappen lassen und seine Wünsche ignorieren. Der Text liegt auf einer täuschend harmlosen Melodie, die der Botschaft den scharfen Kontrast gibt. Als erste Single des Albums wurde es ihre einzige Nummer 1-Single bisher, als es in Frankreich die Spitze der Charts erreichte.

Inside My Nightmare

Johns Vision des Nachspiels eines Autounfalles, in dem die Freundin des Fahrers umkommt, kam dadurch, daß er von genau so einer Tragödie las, die in seiner Gegend passierte, und sich vorstellte, wie man sich in der Situation fühlen würde. Der Song wurde live mit Erfolg aufgeführt, und einige der musikalischen Themen tauchten später im 1990er "Psychedelic Child" wieder auf.

Dieser Song scheint den Anfang einer Beziehung zu beschreiben, aber der Schreiber ist sehr vorsichtig und spielt lieber ein beobachtendes Wartespiel, bevor er sich zu etwas verpflichtet. Les drückt sicher die Gedanken vieler Fans aus, wenn er singt: "Ich könnte ein Lied schreiben, das dein Herz fliegen läßt".

I’ve Got A Feeling

Eine wehmütige Ballade über Trennung von einer/m Geliebten. Der Song wurde nachgemischt mit extra Saxophon dazu, als er zur zweiten Single des Albums wurde; die 7" war eine gekürzte Version, aber aus merkwürdigem Grund kam die 12" nur als Promo heraus. Diese lange Version erschien später auf der Compact Story Of Barclay James Harvest-Sammlung auf CD.
