Biography
Norman "Hurricane" Smith
Norman Smith, the producer of Barclay James Harvest and Once Again, died on Monday, 3rd March, 2008, aged 85. In 1959 Smith started at Abbey Road Studios as a tape operator (as did Alan Parsons some time later) before becoming an engineer, working on all of the recordings by The Beatles until 1965 when EMI promoted him from engineer to producer. He produced Pink Floyd's The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, A Saucerful Of Secrets and Ummagumma, and The Pretty Things' S.F. Sorrow. In 1971 he began making his own records under the name Hurricane Smith and scored hit singles such as "Don't Let It Die" and "Oh Babe, What Would You Say?". He was active into his eighties, issuing a new CD including re-recordings of his hit singles in 2004, and publishing his memoirs, John Lennon Called Me Normal, in 2007.
