I'm so sad to learn (belatedly) of the passing of Mel. Some of my earliest musical memories are of listening to my older brother's BJH LPs. The first concert I ever went to was to see BJH at the New Theatre in Oxford in 1977. It still is a fantastic memory and I can still see Mel's awesome drumming performance in my mind. It is so sad to think of this youthful energy and vigour passed away. Thanks for the memories and RIP.

I am very saddened to have just found out that Mel died in 2004. My heart and soul goes out to him, his family, friends and the band. I am blessed to have seen him and BJH live in concert growing up in Germany in one of the greatest concerts I have ever seen (Hammerschmidthalle near Nuernberg). Mel and the band had to return after the houselights went on and literally nobody would leave unless they gave a third encore after they had showered already.it still sends shivers down my spine that night. I have seen almost 300 concerts and that night was one of the greatest concerts and performances I've ever seen. God bless him and for the music he gave us to enjoy.

It is a pity that I haven’t found the way to this site before. But it makes moaning the more about the fact that there are only 160 entries, some kind of words for someone, who has capivated millions. The first time I perceived BJH was in 1977, when Rock'n Roll Star entered the local German charts. And it was a fortunate circumstance that I was allowed to conduct an interview for our school journal two years later. BJH was in my hometown and it was one of the greatest moments in my life, above all John, Les and Mel invited me to accompany them to a restaurant after the gig. At that time I did not really comprehend how lucky I was that night. I simply was much too young with 17. Two years later we met again for another interview. You three guys were so normal and so friendly, I could shake my head this very day. When I read in the news about the death of Mel, a part of my youth was extinguished. Only 160 mourners here, passed away in loneliness. he did not deserve that. Rest in peace, adieu. May John and Les find at least a last time the fortitude and energy for a concert to enchant their audience with the good old songs. It would be in Mel’s sense, I suppose.

Many thanks for your kind thoughts, Tom. Don't worry about Mel not being missed, though, because in fact close to a thousand people have made entries in this book of condolences - an automatic setting in the system hid a lot of the older ones. I am now changing that setting so that you will be able to read all of the words of appreciation for Mel.
Thanks again,

I have never seen no one playing drums as you did. Your peculiar way to play was one of the best things in BJH music. Miss you Mel
