Andrew Pryce Jackman

Andrew Pryce Jackman, who wrote and performed the string arrangement for "Guitar Blues", died aged 57 on the 16th August 2003 of a heart attack. Andrew was one of the unsung heroes of music. He started out in a band called Syn with Chris Squire and Pete Banks. When the band split Chris and Pete went off to form Yes.

Andrew arranged and conducted Peter Skellern's 1972 hit "You're A Lady", but continued working on and off with members of Yes both in and out of the group. In 1977 he released a solo single "One Of Those Days" under the alias of The Tramp. The following year he rejoined Peter Skellern for Skellern and again in 1979 for Astaire.

He became the conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra and was responsible for the seminal Classic Rock which reached number 3 in the album charts in 1978. Its success spawned a further nine albums. He worked with Elkie Brooks on "Screen Gems" (1984), two Top 10 albums for Rush Power Windows (1985) and Hold Your Fire (1987),Barclay James Harvest on Face To Face (1987), Barbara Streisand on Back To Broadway (1993) and Nanci Griffith on Dust Bowl Symphony (1999). Other artists that benefited from his expertise included the Kings Singers, Michael Crawford, Elton John, Seal, Barbara Dickson, Lesley Garratt and even the Sex Pistols on The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle.

Most recently he worked on solo projects with both Chris Squire and Steve Howe. He composed music for TV and Films (including An American Werewolf In London), the handover of Hong Kong, Arsenal football club, choirs, churches and local brass bands. He was a kind and genourous man with a great sense of humour. Andrew was a loving husband and father but he was also a good friend to everyone who knew him. Although his memory will always live on through his family it is his amazing legacy of music that will be his gift to the rest of us.

[Editor's note: Andrew came from a musical family; his brother, Gregg, worked with BJH as a sound engineer on Ring Of Changes and Victims Of Circumstance, and co-produced Face To Face. Their father, Bill Jackman, played clarinet on "When I’m Sixty Four" from The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.]

Andrew Pryce Jackman
